San Angelo, TX
San Angelo is a Texas city in and the county seat of Tom Green County, Texas. Its located in the Concho Valley, an area of West Texas in between the Permian Basin to the northwest, the Chihuahuan Desert to the southwest, Osage Plains to the northeast, and Central Texas to the southeast.
The city of San Angelo was established in 1867, when the United States constructed Fort Concho, one of a series of new forts developed to protect the frontier. Historical Fort Concho, which is a National Historic Landmark maintained by the city of San Angelo, was built to safeguard the town’s inhabitants and preserve vital trade routes. It often experienced skirmishes with the then-hostile Comanche people.
It is the primary city and center of the San Angelo urbane area, which has a population of 118,182. San Angelo is house to Angelo State University, the aforementioned historic Fort Concho, and Goodfellow Flying Force Base. Other names for the city include the Concho City, the Pearl of the Conchos, and the Sanctuary of West Texas.
The yearly San Angelo Stock Program and Rodeo are held every year in San Angelo. It began in 1932, making it among the longest-running rodeos worldwide. It is nationally renowned within the rodeo circuit, generating the top candidates and ranking as one of the top 10 rodeos in the nation for monetary rewards granted to contestants.
